Whether or not acid-loving plants like rhododendrons thrive is mainly dependent on the soil conditions. The soil must be low in lime (acid), and it must be moist without being too wet.

All the necessary nutrients, including micronutrients, must be available to the plants.

Rhododendron Mix

Garden soil does not normally fulfil the requirements of acid-loving plants, which is why we have created a special Rhododendron Mix.

It is a mixture of fine and coarse moss peat, to which organic fertilizer, NPK fertilizer and slow-release micronutrients have been added.

The raised acid bed
Creating a raised bed avoids a lot of digging. This is because the acid bed should consist of pure Rhododendron Mix, so it is easiest to build on top of the soil.

First make an edge of large stones,
peat blocks, or the like.

Loosen the Rhododendron Mix well and spread in a layer approx. 40 cm thick. Water the bed thoroughly until soaked.

Peat blocks
Use large peat blocks as edging around the acid bed.

The blocks are cut straight from the bog and dried in the sun. They measure approx. 45 x 45 x 24 cm with uneven edges. They give a natural appearance, which is ideal for an acid bed.

They are easy to saw into smaller pieces if necessary.

Small or creeping acid-loving plants can spread in the peat edging. Plant them in the cracks between the blocks or in small planting holes made directly in the blocks.

Planting and care
It is easy to plant by digging planting holes with your hands. Firm the compost well around the root ball.
Rhododendrons should be fed twice during the spring. You can use ordinary NPK fertilizer or a special ericaceous fertilizer.
Check now and again to make sure that the acid bed is damp enough. It will be necessary to water the bed thoroughly during dry periods.
