Roses

They do best on a sunny, open site out of the wind.

Roses are relatively demanding plants and like a nutrient-rich soil that is not too compacted.

Pindstrup Rose Substrate gives roses the good soil mixture they need. It is a well-fertilized mix to which clay granulate has been added. Rose substrate is used to improve the soil at planting so as to create optimum conditions for plants to become established and grow.

Site

Roses like sunshine and air, but not wind. Lots of light is necessary, because light gives them the energy to grow.

Fresh air helps keeps the plants healthy and resistant to fungal diseases and pests.

Planting

A strong root system is the best guarantee of healthy, free-flowering plants.

Dig a planting hole approx. 40 cm deep and loosen another spade-depth of soil. Mix the excavated soil with Rose Substrate in a ratio of 1:1.

Roses should be planted with the graft approximately 5 cm below the surface.
It is a good idea to stand roses in a bucket of water before planting to soak the roots.
Hold the rose at the right height and start to fill soil around the roots.
When the hole is three quarters full, firm the soil gently and fill the hole with water. Once the water has sunk in, fill the rest of the hole in with the soil mixture.

Roses in pots

Roses are excellent for cultivation in large pots. Choose a large, relatively tall pot with a drainage hole in the bottom. Having a large volume of compost ensures rooms for both water and food.

Food and water

Roses have to be given nutrients in the form of manure or NPK fertilizer. When roses fail to thrive, it is often because they are undernourished.

Spread manure out in a layer between the roses in the autumn or early spring. Scatter NPK fertilizer in April, using approx. 1 kg per 10 m . Apply 1/2 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per m2, e.g. calcium nitrate or sulphate of ammonia, in June.

Watering may be necessary in dry periods. Always water thoroughly, i.e. at least 20 litres per square metre of rose bed.

Roses, with their glorious perfume and beautiful flowers, are difficult to do without.
